Update on campus construction projects

Posted by Office of the Campus Dean

The plaza fountains and in-ground irrigation system will be turned on temporarily for testing and then shut down for the winter.  A variety of trees, plants, and shrubbery have been planted, and all concrete work is finished.  This week the contractor will complete above-grade electric work for the new light poles, and seal the new stone tiles before blacktopping the access drive on their way out. Please note the contractor will be blacktopping the Mosler dock area this Thursday and Friday (November 12, 13) so the faculty/staff parking lot will be closed those two days.

Other recent campus improvements include: installation of a new Energy Star-rated roof for Phelps Hall,; replacement of the 38-year-old boilers in Phelps (no boiler on campus is more than 11 years old now); complete technological upgrade of our largest classroom in 200 Mosler; elevator control upgrades in Phelps; University Hall parking lot expansion; construction of new entryway to Parrish Auditorium;  installation of  approximately 100 energy-saving automatic light switches; installation of water-saving, low-volume flush valves; installation of no-hands sinks; construction of an exterior tiered classroom next to the gym; installation of auxiliary heating system in the Conservatory  to preserve the plant collection during extremely cold weather, and installation of an additional gravel parking lot across the street.

Wall-mounted clocks in all MUH buildings are now synchronized automatically during seasonal time changes and power outages, via notification relay from the cell phone tower. This improvement was a Faculty Concerns Committee recommendation. The system worked very well during last weekend’s “fall back.”

Another Faculty Concerns Committee recommendation being addressed is the card-swipe system for faculty/staff access to campus buildings and classrooms during off-normal hours. While priority will be given to University Hall due to its location, plans are in the works to equip all campus buildings with card-swipe access.

Other near-term priorities include renovating the second floor of Rentschler Hall during the summer of 2010 and continuing to upgrade as many classrooms and faculty offices as possible during the summer of 2010.

Thank you for your patience during campus construction activities this fall.

The first new Phelps boiler has been installed.

The mechanical contractor has installed the first new boiler in the Phelps penthouse and the start up date has been set for the first week of October.  Once the first boiler has been running a tested, the contractor will begin to remove the last old boiler and prepare for the delivery of its replacement.  The contractor has a goal to complete his work by the second week of November.  This project is replacing the original, 38 year old boilers.

Phelps/Parrish roof is completed.

The contractor received final approval on this roof replacement project and is wrapping things up.  This is the fourth energy star rated roof that has been installed on the Hamilton Campus in the last 4 years.

Wet weather is slowing Plaza Project but you can really see it taking shape.

Even though we have had quite a bit of rain the summer and early fall, the contractor has been moving forward with progress on the plaza.  With the walls almost complete with brick work, one can begin to see the general layout of the new plaza.  About half of the wall space that you currently see will allow for comfortable seating.  The contractor is pushing to get the ramps completed on the north end (close to Wilks/Schwarm) so foot traffic can again utilize those building entrances.

Punch List Continues in Mosler 200

The contractor is continuing to take care of the items on his punch list for Mosler 200.  Currently there is a leaking pipe in the ceiling which will require repair work that will take place in between classes on Friday, September 25th.  So far the improved acoustics and new layout have been appreciated by those who use the room.

University Hall Parking Lot Expansion Target Dates

The contractor schedule for completing their work the last week before school starts (weather permitting):

Monday/Tuesday – Prep area and begin blacktopping expanded parking area.

Wednesday/Thursday – re-surface existing parking lot and drive.

Friday – re-strip entire lot.

Faculty Lot to Be Opened Monday, August 17th

The faculty lot that has been torn up due to the plaza project is being top coated and striped today.  Access to the entire lot will be opened on Monday.  Access to the Mosler dock area will now be limited to deliveries only since it will now be used for a staging area for brick and block.

Fifth Floor Faculty Office Upgrades Near Completion

The last shipment of furniture is arriving today for the 24 faculty offices that were upgraded this summer.   Thanks to Connie Webb for assisting in coordinating office moves.  We appreciate everyone’s patience during this entire project.

Contractor Installing Finishes up until August 21st

The contractor will be completing the ceiling installation this weekend so lighting and sprinkler installation can take place on the 17th and 18th in Mosler 200.  Carpet and furniture will be installed late next week just in time for classes.  Acoustic improvements and an increased seating capacity were part of the projects goals.
